Hmm,
Just got an email/spam from collegewikis.com claiming to have a wiki for UCSC which would be cool. But, you have to create an account and log in to see any of their content. This just seems to me to be directly opposite to the wiki concept of open information. So I didn't log in. But I do think it would be good for someone to create a open UCSC wiki.

Hey - glad you like the idea . I'm on the collegewikis team - we're working on making it open. It was open about a month ago but we got some posts that were inappropriate (ads for viagra / links to x sites / etc) so this is a temporary fix.
since asking people to register, we've actually gotten a lot of high-quality and good information, so it's in many ways good in terms or building a trusted community (e.g. facebook)
That's still rather evasive and arousing of suspicion. Why don't you allow people to see the articles while requiring registration and log-in site editing. That's what wikipedia does for problematic pages.
Yes, That is my main objection. I can see where it might be reasonable to have some sort of regustration before you can start posting but having to register before you can see the content makes me think CollegeWikis is just trying to gather personal info so they can sell me something. And, as I said, I think it is against the primary wiki spirit of providing useful information to everyone.
